Freya Lund Sonenstein
Freya Lund Sonenstein directs the Population Studies
Center at the Urban Institute. Since
1986 she has directed the National Survey of Adolescent Males which measures and tracks
the reproductive behaviors of teenage males in the U.S. A major focus of Dr.
Sonenstein's research is teenage childbearing and its links with policy and programs,
particularly regarding the male role in teen fertility. She has written extensively about
teenage sexual risk taking and program interventions aimed at reducing risk. Her most
recent publication is Involving Males in Preventing Teen Pregnancy: A Guide for Program
Planners. She serves on the Demographic and Behavioral Science Study Section at the
National Institutes of Health and on the Effective Programs and Research Task Force of the
National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. Between 1985 and 1989 Dr. Sonenstein
co-directed the Program on Families and Children at the Florence Heller School of Advanced
Studies at Brandeis University. In 1983 she was director of demonstration programs
and evaluation at the Office of Adolescent Pregnancy Programs, U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services.
