Jason DeParle joined The New York Times in 1989, and has been covering antipoverty policy from the Washington bureau since 1990. He currently splits his time between the daily newspaper and The New York Times Magazine.

Before coming to the Times, he worked at The Washington Monthly, The New Republic, and The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. He grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and he is a 1982 graduate of Duke University.
