Cassie Statuto Bevan
Carol "Cassie" Statuto Bevan
received her doctorate in Child Development from Columbia
University. She completed a Post-Doctoral
Fellowship in the Bush Program for Child Development and
Social Policy at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Bevan went to Washington, D.C., on
a Congressional Science Fellowship under the auspices of
the Society for Research in Child Development and the
American Association for the Advancement of
Science. Upon completion of this Fellowship, Dr.
Bevan joined the Family Impact Seminar at Catholic
University of America in Washington, D.C. She went
to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1984 to work for
the newly established Select Committee on Children,
Youth, and Families and after several years became the
Republican Staff director. Cassie joined the
National Council for Adoption in 1993 to become the
Principal Investigator of the Child Protection Project
and to head the Council's Office of Public Policy.
She is the author of Foster Care:
Too Much, Too Little, Too Early, Too Late, a
monograph published under a grant from the Smith
Richardson Foundation, Inc., with support from the Milton
Hershey School and Boys Town. In 1994, Dr. Bevan
was appointed by the Speaker of the U.S. House of
Representatives to serve as a Commissioner on the U.S.
Commission on Child and Family Welfare. Currently,
Dr. Bevan is a Professional Staff Member of the
Subcommittee on Human Resources of the Committee on Ways
and Means in the United States House of
Representatives.
Dr. Bevan is married and the mother of
two young children.
